During the last five days there has been a holiday here in Nepal for Dashain. Everyone visits friends and relatives and the shops are shut. Goats are killed as part of a sacrifice, but not quite as much blood flowed in the streets as in previous years. People are starting to protest about the cruelty to animals at this time. It is still pretty gruesome as the slaughter takes place on the footpath, in full view of everyone, including the Bhuddist monks who walk by.

For the next few days there is a Hindu cultural experience taking place behind the house where Netra lives. They need to advertise so loudspeakers have been positioned on roof tops so everyone within a kilometer can hear the message. It wakes Netra at 4am and continues all day. Apparently some of the early morning noise is generated from a CD.

This morning a truck carrying a god and a load of shouting and chanting people drove down the street past Shambhala Hotel.
At this time of year there is not a lot to do. The restaurant here is shut so if I want to eat lunch I have to walk to Bhoudanath, the Bhuddist area, which is over a kilometer in the hot sun. It is worth it for the apple pie and ginger lemon tea. Usually I spend some time at a women’s refuge where there are a few girls and a new 3 week old baby. She was rescued from a mother who did not want her and was threatening to kill her.

Niru cooks an evening meal and breakfast for me in Netra’s room each day. Bright Future is now open in the morning, but there are not many children there. We drew on Tshirts and I will try to iron them to fix the drawing. Netra could not understand the word iron, but fortunately one of the dictionaries from Essendon DIK had a picture of an iron. It was just a case of placing the stress in the correct place.
This morning Ian, a tourist who is staying in Kopan, came to the library and the children asked him questions and practiced their English. Netra invited him for breakfast.
